Officer Kenneth Santucci was killed in an automobile accident when his patrol car was struck by another vehicle that had run a stop sign. The accident occurred at the intersection of Union Avenue and King Street in Nutley.

He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. His partner was also transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

Officer Santucci is survived by his expectant wife and two children. He had served with the Belleville Police Department for 8 months and had previously served with the Newark Police Department for 2 years.

Deputy Marty Martin was killed in an automobile accident on I-71 while he and another deputy worked an undercover operation at approximately 12:30 am.

Their unmarked SUV hydroplaned as a result of heavy rain, struck a culvert, and overturned.

Deputy Martin was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. His partner sustained moderate injuries.

Deputy Martin had served with the Franklin County Sheriff's Department for ten years. He is survived by his wife and son.

Sergeant Paul Starzyck was shot and killed while responding to a shots fired call at a local hair salon.

The salon owner's estranged husband had entered the business with a weapon looking for the woman. As he searched the salon he fired several shots.

As responding officers arrived at the scene, they exchanged shots with the man and Sergeant Starzyck was struck. Sergeant Starzyck was flown to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

WASHINGTON (AP)—The first meeting between Washington, D.C., schools Georgetown and Howard was postponed Saturday because of Tropical Storm Hanna. The game has been rescheduled to Sunday.

Georgetown coach Kevin Kelly said the decision was made with the safety of the athletes and fans in mind. Kelly said the weather was expected to improve Sunday for what may become a great college rivalry for the nation’s capital.

The game will be played at Greene Stadium on Howard’s campus. The schools agreed to a four-game series.

Cats Rescued after Apparently Starting Fire

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --

Chattanooga firefighters rescued several cats during a house fire that investigators say was probably caused by the cats themselves.

Fire department spokesman Bruce Garner said firefighters responded to an alarm Thursday morning and found a fire in the kitchen. While no one was home, they found about 10 cats inside.

Some of the cats escaped the house on their own, but some showed signs of smoke inhalation. Firefighters used oxygen bottles and special masks to revive several of the cats. Garner said one cat was not expected to survive.

Capt. Lesley Morgan said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental and most likely from a cat knocking over an unattended candle in the kitchen.
